Tuli ekyo kyetukola

One of the furthest corners of the globe we've spread to is dismas_angle_312Kampala, Uganda.

Dismas Otoori discovered We Are What We Do through our website, back in 2004. He launched the Ugandan We Are What We Do campaign (known locally as "Tuli Ekyo Kyetukola", a literal translation of We Are What We Do) to a gathering of over 200 people from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Southern Sudan and Rwanda at Ndejje University on 23 January 2005.

Various big-wigs attended including the national leader of the Family Federation for World Peace and the Guild President. A marching brass band made the day go with a swing.

"The speakers gave inspiring talks that mainly encouraged participants to make change in their communities," says Dismas.  "Most participants requested written copies of the speeches and they also asked if they could organise their own We Are What We Do events in their home districts."dismas_angle2_300

Since then Dismas has continued to run campaigns in the schools he is involved in - Heritage College and Trinity High School, both in Kampala.

It's interesting how universally relevant our actions are.

In Uganda, Action 007: Plant a tree is particularly beneficial as charcoal and firewood are still the main sources of domestic fuel.

The poor state of the roads and distance most people live from medical facilities means Action 004: Learn basic first aid is also particularly important.

Equally, city councils don't have enough resources to collect rubbish, so our ugandanactions_300actions around looking after where you live have become an important message for disease-prevention.

We're in regular contact with Dismas and always enjoy getting the latest installment of what they're up to.
