Walking Dads, Grans and Lazy Aunty Jans in Newham

walkyourdadgroup2_300_01We are currently running a campaign in the London Borough of Newham to get children and adults more healthy and fit as well getting families to spend more time together.

We've got a few events on the go, based around Action 114: Love where you live and Action 102: Walk your Dad (which we've extended to the succinctly titled "Walk your Dad, Gran, Lazy Aunty Jan or anyone else you find lying around on the sofa").

Our Newham community worker, Frances Clarke, has got Plashet Secondary, St James' Junior, Upton Cross, Woodgrange Infant, Godwin Junior, Earlham Primary, Latham primary and William Davies primary schools to run campaigns that get families walking.

We're running workshops where kids draw treasure maps of their local areas and make cards to invite grown ups to go for a walk with them.

We've created maps, and posters to track how many steps they've taken and walks they've been on. You can download them for free here. We also made a short film to get people inspired.

Two of the schools are also running Step Counter Challenges, where all the kids are given two pedometers  - one for them and one for a member of their family. After two weeks the totals will be totted up and the furthest-walking family will be given a fabulous star prize.
