How we did the maths

An energy-saving light bulb might not seem cheap but over its lifetime it could save you 37 quid and a lot more besides. Like the planet for example.

    They can be cheap

I think there's a misconception that energy saving light bulbs are really expensive, but recently I saw three for £1 at Spar, and I bought a pack of three small ones suitable for lamps in Poundland. This was a great purchase because they'll last for ages! :) 29 August 2010, 00:30

Bayonet bulb mountain... wake up energy companies!

I went to my wifes grandmother's the other day and went to change a bulb for her. She said she had some energy saving bulbs in her draw that had been sent by her energy company - FREE! Great... until I tried to fit one and found that they were all for 'Bayonet' fittings only.

Practically all of her light fittings are now the screw in type and so she has over 10 bulbs sat in a draw that she is unable to use.

If you look at most fixtures that are for sale in stores like Ikea, B&Q, Homebase etc. you'll see that practically all now have screw in bulb attachments and not the old Bayonet type.

So all I can say is 'wake up energy companies' and start sending out the screw in type bulbs and help to stop wasting peoples time, money and energy.

    As many as possible

I don't like the fact that as yet the disposal of these items is still a problem and that many older ones are simply being stock piled until recycling facilities exist. Having said that though they do use less energy over a period so I'm all in favour.

We have them all over the house and work

    NOT SAVING

We had a workshop about electricity at our uni, and the technician told us that energy saving light bulbs are only really starting to save you energy after being on for more than 4 hours. The thing is that energy saving lightbulbs need to 'heat up' after you turn them on, and this process draws out so much energy that they only start to be efficient after being on for at least 4 hours. Therefore if you have energy saving light bulbs, and you keep turning off your lights every time you leave the room, you are actually using up much more energy than with regular lightbulbs. This is one of the reasons why huge office buildings often leave all the lights on during the night. Keeping them on running costs them less than having to pay for all the energy that gets drawn to heat up the lightbulbs after they are turned on. 19 February 2010, 03:17

    using low energy bulbs

I have tried low energy bulbs in both ceiling fitmets and table lamps. To me, low energy bulbs really do not give out enough light so that I can work beneath them as I do with ordinary bulbs. The only way I can use them is in my bedside lamps and table lamps. I simply cannot sew, knit, crochet, do woodwork etc under a low energy lamp. They actually are not good enough and I would never bwillingly uy any as they are too expensive, but will use the ones that have been given to me by the utilities companies. 10 February 2010, 10:40

100 % energy saving Light bulbs

All our light bulbs are energy saving. The most difficult ones to find are IP44 for showers. In the garden we have LEDs lights on walking path : they provide enough light to move around but don't disturb the night life of the garden (full moon light). We have Xten commands to switch on and off easily and our outside LED lights are monitored by our home server which evaluate everyday the sunset hour. 04 February 2010, 13:48

The whole house 4 years and going.

4 years ago my wife and I switched to CFL's and have not looked back. I would like to point out however, that they only last about three years. Three years is still long enough for us to have seen a huge return on our investment. Switching all the lights seems to have saved us around $10 a month. That's $360 over the life of the bulbs. the switch only cost $30 because we were able to take advantage of government rebates. Doing this put $330 back in our pockets and made our carbon footprint a little smaller. I would advise anyone, no matter how small or large your home to switch as many bulbs as you can. You'll save money and you'll have a smaller carbon footprint. 31 January 2010, 14:12

    Saving energy

All of us every day switch on thousands of lights and we leave them on for so long. We must think about what we're doing. So make a change and switch off as many lights as you can. Last year millions of people did Earth hour. Earth hour is switching off as many electrical things as we could. And it made an amazing change to our enviroment. I care about the world, do you? 18 October 2009, 10:56

The Trick with Energy Saving Lightbulbs

The thing about energy saving light bulbs is that they take on average at least 20 minutes before they start saving electricity. So these bulbs are best for landing lights, or garden lights, or any other light that you leave on for a long period of time. If you fit it to a light that you are switching on and off a lot, you are not saving any electricity or money at all, and possibly using more! Please thank Diana the light lady for this helpful piece of information.

    how about all your bulbs...

each time you need a new bulb - get an energy saver. if you are using the bulb somewhere where you only need it for a short while each time - make sure you ask for the bulb that lights up pretty quickly (most modern do). if you like to use a dimmer, ask for the one that can be used with a dimmer switch. Whatever energy saving bulb you get - do not look at the price too closely - it is well worth it. Both for you and for this world of ours. :-)

I've fitted a couple and have 3 more in the cupboard, problem is a)it can be difficult finding bulbs that go with your light fittings and b)they take agesa to warm up and when they do they don't really give enough light. Nice idea but the technology needs improving.
