Action #015

Register online as an organ donor

This action has been done 4,079 times which means we could save up to 32,632 lives.

How we did the maths

There are currently about 8000 people in the UK waiting for a transplant. How amazing if after you died, your heart kept beating inside someone else's chest. Your liver lived on. Or your kidneys kept going.

90% of us support organ donation in principle, but only 27% have joined the organ donation register.

Here's what to do: Firstly, tell your next of kin about your wishes. Otherwise, in the heat of their distress, they might easily go back on your decision. Secondly, register online at www.organdonation.nhs.uk

    Give Life

I always wanted to register, but it was always something I put off. Last night my best friend was in a car accident and is in critical condition, it made me think. I posted the link on facebook, I hope it inspires some other people to make the same choice. 19 April 2010, 03:30

    Was at the hospital...

I was at the hospital visiting my mother, who had an operation on her these days.
In the hospital, there were several informational papers about a healthy lifestyle and also a organ donor identification, which I filled in and now I'm a organ donor.

    Organ donation

In Australia you are asked on your drivers licence application, you can also register at any medicare office but the most important thing is to discuss it with your family as only one needs to object on the day and it won't happen even if you are registered as an organ donor.

I have been through the process on the other end as a career for a family member who would have died without organ donation. It is hard to describe how sick they were and how amazing it was to get the call. It is not any easy process on anyone, and they were one of the lucky ones. Fantastic result and about four years after transplant they competed in the transplant olympics!

    Organ Donation

Definately make your wishes known. My partner Kelvin got a new heart 4 mths ago and is now doing well. He hasn't worked for a year but is about to start work again (part-time initially). Going through the process the donor co-ordinators have told us that family can over-ride your wishes. Tell your family today.
Even though Kelvin got a new heart, he was able to donate the valve from his old heart. He did not need a new because he abused his body with bad diet. He used to do triathlons but caught a virus which caused his heart to be diseased.
